Two out when winning run scored.

Pirates reliever Roy Face couldn't protect a one-run lead in the ninth, but he managed to get the win when Don Hoak singled home Bill Virdon with two outs in the bottom of the frame to give the Pirates a twinbill sweep and a three-game winning streak. In the Cubs' ninth, three singles produced the tying run, off the bat of Ernie Banks. In the Bucs' half, there were two outs and a runner on first when Rocky Nelson walked and Bill Mazeroski singled, loading the bases. Hoak then stroked a single to center, scoring the winning run.


Pittsburgh 5, Chicago 1 (DH #1)

The Pirates broke open a close game with three runs in the eighth inning, capped by a two-run single off the bat of Bill Mazeroski. Harvey Haddix went 7.1 innings for the win. The Cubs didn't help their cause by committing a season-high four errors.


St. Louis 6, Philadelphia 2 (DH #2)

WP- Mizell (7-2); LP- Cardwell (1-5)

The Cardinals got the doubleheader sweep behind another big inning---this time a four-run third inning. The big blow was a three-run triple by Joe Cunningham. Vinegar Bend Mizell pitched seven innings to earn his seventh win. Shortstop Wally Shannon had three hits (two doubles), an RBI and he scored a run.

St. Louis 10, Philadelphia 5 (DH #1)
at Philadelphia, PA

The Cardinals used a six-run fifth inning to run away and hide from the Phillies. The Cards rapped out six hits in the frame, including three doubles, chasing starter Ruben Gomez. Gino Cimoli had four hts and two RBI. Bill White's three-run homer (4) in the first inning set the tone for the Cards as they tried to keep pace with first-place San Francisco.


Los Angeles 4, Milwaukee 1
at Milwaukee, WI

The Dodgers used late runs to win. Gil Hodges and Wally Moon each cranked home runs for Los Angeles, which salvaged the final game of the three-game series. Don Drysdale has a decision in each one of his 14 starts.

Cincinnati 9, San Francisco 8 (DH #2)

In a wild, back-and-forth game, Roy McMillan ended things with a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the ninth to enable the Reds to avoid a four-game sweep. Red hot Willie Mays (six home runs so far this week) put the Giants ahead with a three-run homer in the top of the ninth. The Giants capped off the series with five more home runs (Jim Davenport hit two) to give them a league-leading 72 four-baggers. San Francisco scored 41 runs in the four games.

San Francisco 12, Cincinnati 3 (DH #1)
at Cincinnati, OH

The Giants scored double digit runs for the third straight game against the woeful Reds pitching staff. San Francisco clubbed five home runs, including two each by Willie Mays and Leon Wagner. Jack Sanford pitched his fourth complete game.
