Willie Kirkland, Orlando Cepeda and Hobie Landrith all hit home runs as the Giants held off the Braves. The Giants were ahead, 5-0, by the fifth inning, but Milwaukee chipped away at the lead.
With the score 5-4 in the Giants eighth, Landrith connected for a solo homer and an insurance run, which was needed when the Braves rallied in the ninth. Reliever Gordon Jones entered the game for San Francisco with runners on first and third with nobody out for the Braves. After allowing an RBI single, Jones got a strikeout, popout and ground out to preserve the win. The Giants took three of four from the Braves.


St. Louis 6, Pittsburgh 0
at Pittsburgh, PA

The Pirates were booed off the field in Pittsburgh as the crowd showed its displeasure with yet another lackluster performance. The Bucs are 6-17 in their past 23 games. Ernie Broglio was the latest pitcher to tame the Pirates, tossing a complete game, four-hit shutout. Joe Cunningham had four hits for the Cardinals.


Philadelphia 3, Chicago 0
at Philadelphia, PA

Gene Conley twirled a complete game, four-hit shutout to lead the Phillies. Wally Post had three singles for Philadelphia. Between the second and seventh innings, Conley retired 17 straight batters.


Los Angeles 8, Cincinnati 3
at Cincinnati, OH

Charlie Neal hit two home runs, giving him a league-leading total of 15, and the Dodgers waltzed to victory. Neal's homers were both two-run shots. Clem Labine pitched four innings of shutout relief to earn the save. Labine entered the game in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out. Three batters later (lineout, popout, flyout), the Dodgers were out of the inning unscathed.
