The Braves put this one away early, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. League-leading hitter Hank Aaron went 5-for-5 with five runs scored. Frank Torre chipped in with three hits and three RBI. Billy Bruton and Del Crandall each had three RBI as well. It was the worst loss of the season for the first-place Giants. Spot starter Bob Rush twirled a complete-game, five-hit shutout.

Two out when winning run scored.

Danny Kravitz's pinch-hit RBI single with two out in the bottom of the ninth off Lindy McDaniel plated Don Hoak with the winning run. With two outs and nobody on, Hoak walked. Roman Mejias followed with a single, sending Hoak to third. Kravitz then delivered a ground ball up the middle to bring Hoak home. Pittsburgh's Harvey Haddix found himself in yet another pitching duel---this time with St. Louis' Larry Jackson.

Charlie Neal hit two home runs, Ron Fairly and Johnny Roseboro added round trippers, and the Dodgers ran roughshod over the NL's worst pitching staff. Cincinnati's Brooks Lawrence couldn't make it out of the fifth inning, surrendering six earned runs and three of the four Dodgers home runs. The Dodgers are now just one game below .500.

Willie Mays' two-run double in the top of the eighth inning snapped a scoreless tie. After Hank Aaron's RBI single made the score 2-1 in the Braves' eighth, Darryl Spencer smacked a solo home run in the ninth off Milwaukee reliever Juan Pizarro for an insurance run. The streaking Giants extended their first-place lead over idle St. Louis to 3.5 games.

The Giants extended their first-place lead to three games behind their power and John Antonelli. For the second time in less than a week, three Giants hit consecutive homers in the same inning: Willie Mays, Orlando Cepeda and Leon Wagner all connected in the first inning off Cubs starter Glenn Hobbie. Antonelli went six innings and raised his record to 9-2 with an ERA of 1.89. Mays added a second homer, a two-run shot, in the fifth inning.

The Braves earned a doubleheader sweep and two shutouts in the nightcap. Warren Spahn not only pitched his eighth complete game, he smacked a double and a two-run homer for three RBI on the day. Eddie Mathews (two-run) and Frank Torre (solo) also hit home runs for Milwaukee. Hank Aaron had two doubles and a single for the Braves.

Eddie Mathews singled home Billy Bruton in the eighth inning for the game's only run. With one out, Bruton doubled and Mathews promptly singled to center field. Lew Burdette went eight innings and Don McMahon earned the save. Robin Roberts was the tough luck loser for the Phillies.

Ken Boyer's grand slam in the eighth inning off Dodgers starter Sandy Koufax made a rout close, but Art Fowler notched his second save despite authoring a tricky ninth. Fowler struck out Stan Musial with runners on first and second for the game's final out. Don Demeter and Charlie Neal each hit solo homers for the Dodgers, who've won three of four and lead the league in home runs. Cardinals second baseman Don Blasingame committed two errors in a three-run Dodger third inning.

Don Newcombe pitched a complete-game, five-hitter as the Reds swept a doubleheader. The reeling Pirates have lost 15 of 20. Newcombe's fifth complete game was aided by a two-run home run by Pete Whisenant in the first inning. Frank Robinson added three hits (double, two singles) and an RBI.

Roy McMillan's RBI single plated Gus Bell in the bottom of the eighth for the Reds, snapping a 3-3 tie. Bob Skinner's solo homer in the top of the inning had tied the game. Vada Pinson had three hits, including a triple, and an RBI for Cincinnati. Dick Groat went 3-for-5 to lift his average to .333.

The first-place Giants shrugged off a four-run Cubs sixth inning and took control to stay two games in front of St. Louis. Mike McCormick walked home two runs in the Cubs' rally, which tied the game, 5-5. Orlando Cepeda's two-run single capped a three-run seventh for the Giants.

Don Cardwell retired the first 15 Braves hitters as the Phillies cruised to victory. Cardwell came into the game with an ERA of over 8.00. Harry Anderson had three singles and three RBI for the Phillies, who were aided by three Milwaukee errors.

Johnny Podres had one bad inning and it cost him. The Dodgers' Podres was cruising along until the sixth inning, when the Cardinals touched him for four runs on five hits. Gil Hodges' three-run homer in the first was all the Dodgers could muster off Bob Miller and Lindy McDaniel. Miller was making just his second start of the season for St. Louis.

Despite spotting the reeling Pirates five first-inning runs, the Reds came back to win. Pittsburgh starter Bennie Daniels wasn't able to hold the big lead, and was knocked out of the game in the fifth inning. Vada Pinson's three-run homer in the sixth tied the game, and three Pirates errors in the seventh led to two unearned runs that gave Cincinnati the lead for good. Smoky Burgess hit a three-run homer (his first) in the first inning, when the Bucs roughed up Reds starter Jim O'Toole. Pittsburgh has lost 13 of 18.

Vinegar Bend Mizell gave up four runs in a very rough first inning, but then didn't allow another hit until the ninth inning before tiring. Bill White and Hal Smith each had three RBI for the Cardinals, who won two out of three in the series and are now two games behind the Giants for first place. Mizell helped his own cause with two singles.

The Braves ended the Phillies' modest two-game winning streak behind a strong performance by starting pitcher Carl Willey, who threw eight innings of one-run baseball. Hank Aaron's three-run homer in the third inning proved to be the difference.

Dick Gray's three-run homer in the second inning put the Dodgers ahead to stay. Cubs starter Moe Drabowsky lasted just three-plus innings, surrendering six runs and walking five Dodgers hitters. Ron Fairly added a two-run shot in the eighth as the Dodgers won the last two games of the series. The Dodgers blasted three triples off Cubs pitching, yet only one of those scored.

Ron Kline pitched seven strong innings for Pittsburgh, winners for just the third time in their past 12 games. Frank Thomas homered in the second inning for the Reds' lone score.

A crucial ninth inning error by left fielder Leon Wagner cost the Giants. Bill White singled to lead off the Cardinals' ninth, but Wagner let the ball trickle under his glove, enabling White to advance to third base with nobody out. Joe Cunningham promptly singled White home to break a 1-1 tie. Both starters (Larry Jackson and Sam Jones for St. Louis and SF, respectively) pitched eight innings and allowed only one run. Ken Boyer hit a solo homer for the Cardinals in the fourth inning.

The Braves won the rubber game thanks to a 12-hit attack and four Bucs errors. Billy Bruton had three hits and six RBI, including a two-run homer. The Braves blew the game open with a five-run sixth, capped by Bruton's four-bagger. Joey Jay gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings, but it was good enough to qualify for the win. Pittsburgh has lost 9 of 11.

Jim Baxes' pinch-hit home run with two out in the bottom of the ninth snapped the Dodgers' seven-game losing streak in dramatic fashion. The Cubs tied the game in their half of the ninth on a two-out triple by Bobby Thomson that scored Irv Noren. Don Demeter added a two-run homer for Los Angeles.

Willie Kirkland, Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda hit back-to-back-to-back solo homers in the third inning to stake the Giants to a 5-0 lead. Mays had also hit a two-run shot in the first inning. The Cardinals fell to four games behind red-hot, first-place San Francisco. John Antonelli pitched his seventh complete game of the season to earn his eighth win.

Don Hoak's RBI single in the 12th proved to be the game winner. The Braves had the bases loaded with nobody out in the 10th but failed to score. Both starting pitchers (Vern Law and Warren Spahn; Pittsburgh and Milwaukee respectively) threw 11 innings in yet another Pirates-Braves pitching duel. Milwaukee's Hank Aaron and Wes Covington pulled a rare feat: back-to-back triples in the first inning.

The Dodgers dropped their seventh straight as the Cubs roughed up Don Drysdale, the league leader in innings pitched. Seven straight Cubs batters reached base in a six-run second inning. Chicago pounded out 13 hits to move to within one game of .500 (21-22). The Dodgers, alone in first place two weeks ago, are in fifth place, 9 games out of first.

Sparky Anderson had a double and two RBI for the Phillies.

The Giants scored six runs in the eighth inning, erasing a 7-4 deficit in defeating the Dodgers for a fifth straight time in as many days. Don Demeter's grand slam broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning, but the struggling Dodgers couldn't hang onto the lead. Wally Moon, Don Zimmer and Dick Gray also hit home runs for Los Angeles. The Giants banged out eight hits in the eighth inning.

The Braves tied the game in the ninth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Johnny Logan. Aaron then victimized Face in the 10th.
