Pirates reliever Roy Face couldn't protect a one-run lead in the ninth, but he managed to get the win when Don Hoak singled home Bill Virdon with two outs in the bottom of the frame to give the Pirates a twinbill sweep and a three-game winning streak. In the Cubs' ninth, three singles produced the tying run, off the bat of Ernie Banks. In the Bucs' half, there were two outs and a runner on first when Rocky Nelson walked and Bill Mazeroski singled, loading the bases. Hoak then stroked a single to center, scoring the winning run.

The Pirates broke open a close game with three runs in the eighth inning, capped by a two-run single off the bat of Bill Mazeroski. Harvey Haddix went 7.1 innings for the win. The Cubs didn't help their cause by committing a season-high four errors.


St. Louis 6, Philadelphia 2 (DH #2)

The Cardinals got the doubleheader sweep behind another big inning---this time a four-run third inning. The big blow was a three-run triple by Joe Cunningham. Vinegar Bend Mizell pitched seven innings to earn his seventh win. Shortstop Wally Shannon had three hits (two doubles), an RBI and he scored a run.

St. Louis 10, Philadelphia 5 (DH #1)

The Cardinals used a six-run fifth inning to run away and hide from the Phillies. The Cards rapped out six hits in the frame, including three doubles, chasing starter Ruben Gomez. Gino Cimoli had four hts and two RBI. Bill White's three-run homer (4) in the first inning set the tone for the Cards as they tried to keep pace with first-place San Francisco.


Los Angeles 4, Milwaukee 1

The Dodgers used late runs to win. Gil Hodges and Wally Moon each cranked home runs for Los Angeles, which salvaged the final game of the three-game series. Don Drysdale has a decision in each one of his 14 starts.

Cincinnati 9, San Francisco 8 (DH #2)

In a wild, back-and-forth game, Roy McMillan ended things with a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the ninth to enable the Reds to avoid a four-game sweep. Red hot Willie Mays (six home runs so far this week) put the Giants ahead with a three-run homer in the top of the ninth. The Giants capped off the series with five more home runs (Jim Davenport hit two) to give them a league-leading 72 four-baggers. San Francisco scored 41 runs in the four games.

The Giants scored double digit runs for the third straight game against the woeful Reds pitching staff. San Francisco clubbed five home runs, including two each by Willie Mays and Leon Wagner. Jack Sanford pitched his fourth complete game.

Once again the Pirates took an early lead, but this time they managed to hold on for just their seventh win in their past 25 games. Dick Stuart slugged a two-run homer and Roman Mejias and Rocky Nelson (pinch-hit) each hit solo shots. Bob Skinner went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for Pittsburgh. Alvin Dark's two-run double tied the game for the Cubs in the third but the Pirates pulled away.


Philadelphia 9, St. Louis 2

Robin Roberts took a shutout into the ninth inning, which was ruined by Gene Oliver's two-run homer. Nonetheless, the Phillies cruised to victory thanks to a four-run third that was aided by a crucial error by St. Louis right fielder Joe Cunningham. Gene Freese and Wally Post hit home runs for Philadelphia. Roberts gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out eight.


Milwaukee 3, Los Angeles 2

Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers were cruising through seven innings, then the Braves scored three runs on three hits in the final two innings to steal the victory. Felix Mantilla hit a solo homer in the eighth, and Lee Maye's pinch-hit, two-run single plated the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth. It was the second straight day that the Braves beat the Dodgers in their final at-bat. Gil Hodges' two-run homer was the Dodgers' offense.

The Giants clubbed five home runs in the rout. Twice the Giants hit two homers in the same inning (sixth and ninth). Andre Rodgers and Leon Wagner each slammed three-run shots as the streaking Giants rolled over the league's worst pitching staff. Sam Jones twirled a complete-game, two-hit gem to run his record to 9-2. Jones is allowing just a tad over five hits per nine innings this season.

Alvin Dark and Ernie Banks each had an RBI in the 12th inning as the Cubs rallied to beat the struggling Pirates, who blew a 7-3 lead in the eighth inning. Pittsburgh has lost 18 of their last 24 games. A four-run eighth by the Cubs tied the game. The big blow was a three-run homer by Walt Moryn off Pirates reliever Roy Face. It was Moryn's second homer of the contest. He finished with five RBI. Bob Skinner had a three-run triple for Pittsburgh in the third inning, when the Pirates scored four times to take a 4-2 lead.

John Antonelli won his league-leading 10th game as the Giants beat the Reds in a slugfest. A 10-2 Giants lead quickly got reduced to 10-7 as the Reds scored twice in the seventh inning and three times in the eighth. But Gordon Jones pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down his seventh save. Willie Mays continued his torrid hitting with a 4-for-4 day, including two homers. Willie Kirkland added a three-run shot for the Giants, who continue to be the class of the league.

Joe Adcock slugged a solo home run with two out in the bottom of the 13th inning as the Braves recaptured a game from the Dodgers that they nearly surrendered. Milwaukee jumped to a 3-0 lead after six innings but the Dodgers clawed their way back, tying the game in the ninth when Rip Repulski raced home from third base on a slow ground ball to shortstop by Don Zimmer. Warren Spahn pitched nine innings for the Braves, thus being credited with his league-leading ninth complete game. Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron each hit solo homers for Milwaukee.

Willie Kirkland, Orlando Cepeda and Hobie Landrith all hit home runs as the Giants held off the Braves. The Giants were ahead, 5-0, by the fifth inning, but Milwaukee chipped away at the lead.
With the score 5-4 in the Giants eighth, Landrith connected for a solo homer and an insurance run, which was needed when the Braves rallied in the ninth. Reliever Gordon Jones entered the game for San Francisco with runners on first and third with nobody out for the Braves. After allowing an RBI single, Jones got a strikeout, popout and ground out to preserve the win. The Giants took three of four from the Braves.


St. Louis 6, Pittsburgh 0

The Pirates were booed off the field in Pittsburgh as the crowd showed its displeasure with yet another lackluster performance. The Bucs are 6-17 in their past 23 games. Ernie Broglio was the latest pitcher to tame the Pirates, tossing a complete game, four-hit shutout. Joe Cunningham had four hits for the Cardinals.

Gene Conley twirled a complete game, four-hit shutout to lead the Phillies. Wally Post had three singles for Philadelphia. Between the second and seventh innings, Conley retired 17 straight batters.


Los Angeles 8, Cincinnati 3

Charlie Neal hit two home runs, giving him a league-leading total of 15, and the Dodgers waltzed to victory. Neal's homers were both two-run shots. Clem Labine pitched four innings of shutout relief to earn the save. Labine entered the game in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out. Three batters later (lineout, popout, flyout), the Dodgers were out of the inning unscathed.

Orlando Cepeda smacked a game-tying, solo home run in the ninth inning, then added an RBI double in a 10th inning uprising as the Giants came from behind to beat the Braves. Leading off the ninth, Cepeda took Don McMahon deep over the left field wall. The Giants scored four runs in the tenth off Bob Trowbridge, and Cepeda was in the middle of that rally as well, driving in a run and scoring. The Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning but their bats went mostly silent after that.

The Cardinals scored four runs in the sixth inning, didn't score in any other inning, but it was enough to quell the slumping Pirates---losers of 16 of their past 22 games. Vinegar Bend Mizell tossed his third complete game of the year. Two of the Cardinals' runs were unearned, thanks to an error by right fielder Roman Mejias.

The Cubs snapped a four-game losing streak by jumping to a 5-0 lead by the sixth inning. Bob Hillman improved his record to 6-0 by hurling eight innings. Bobby Thomson had a double and a home run and scored twice for Chicago.

Frank Robinson stroked a single to score Johnny Temple in the bottom of the 11th. The Dodgers' lone run came on a Charlie Neal home run in the first inning. The Reds tied the game in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Frank Thomas. Stan Williams lasted six innings for Los Angeles despite issuing six walks and the Reds having lots of traffic on the base paths. The game-winning sequence saw Temple and Vada Pinson leading off the 11th with singles. Jerry Lynch laid down a sacrifice, setting up Robinson's heroics.
