Once again the Pirates took an early lead, but this time they managed to hold on for just their seventh win in their past 25 games. Dick Stuart slugged a two-run homer and Roman Mejias and Rocky Nelson (pinch-hit) each hit solo shots. Bob Skinner went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for Pittsburgh. Alvin Dark's two-run double tied the game for the Cubs in the third but the Pirates pulled away.

PHI  004 012 02x = 9-11-1
WP- Roberts (7-3); LP- Blaylock (5-6)

Robin Roberts took a shutout into the ninth inning, which was ruined by Gene Oliver's two-run homer. Nonetheless, the Phillies cruised to victory thanks to a four-run third that was aided by a crucial error by St. Louis right fielder Joe Cunningham. Gene Freese and Wally Post hit home runs for Philadelphia. Roberts gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out eight.

Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers were cruising through seven innings, then the Braves scored three runs on three hits in the final two innings to steal the victory. Felix Mantilla hit a solo homer in the eighth, and Lee Maye's pinch-hit, two-run single plated the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth. It was the second straight day that the Braves beat the Dodgers in their final at-bat. Gil Hodges' two-run homer was the Dodgers' offense.

CIN 000 000 000 = 0-2-1

The Giants clubbed five home runs in the rout. Twice the Giants hit two homers in the same inning (sixth and ninth). Andre Rodgers and Leon Wagner each slammed three-run shots as the streaking Giants rolled over the league's worst pitching staff. Sam Jones twirled a complete-game, two-hit gem to run his record to 9-2. Jones is allowing just a tad over five hits per nine innings this season.
