WP- McCormick (4-3); L- Anderson (5-5)

The first-place Giants shrugged off a four-run Cubs sixth inning and took control to stay two games in front of St. Louis. Mike McCormick walked home two runs in the Cubs' rally, which tied the game, 5-5. Orlando Cepeda's two-run single capped a three-run seventh for the Giants.

MIL 000 000 100 = 1-4-3

Don Cardwell retired the first 15 Braves hitters as the Phillies cruised to victory. Cardwell came into the game with an ERA of over 8.00. Harry Anderson had three singles and three RBI for the Phillies, who were aided by three Milwaukee errors.

LA  300 000 000 = 3-7-2
WP- Miller (1-1); SV- McDaniel (6); LP- Podres (3-6)

Johnny Podres had one bad inning and it cost him. The Dodgers' Podres was cruising along until the sixth inning, when the Cardinals touched him for four runs on five hits. Gil Hodges' three-run homer in the first was all the Dodgers could muster off Bob Miller and Lindy McDaniel. Miller was making just his second start of the season for St. Louis.

CIN 000 033 20x = 8-15-0

Despite spotting the reeling Pirates five first-inning runs, the Reds came back to win. Pittsburgh starter Bennie Daniels wasn't able to hold the big lead, and was knocked out of the game in the fifth inning. Vada Pinson's three-run homer in the sixth tied the game, and three Pirates errors in the seventh led to two unearned runs that gave Cincinnati the lead for good. Smoky Burgess hit a three-run homer (his first) in the first inning, when the Bucs roughed up Reds starter Jim O'Toole. Pittsburgh has lost 13 of 18.
