Phi 8, Mil 6

Friday, May 22- The Philadelphia Phillies, with one of the worst offenses in the league, woke up and scored eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings combined, and registered a come-from-behind 8-6 victory over the Milwaukee Braves at Connie Mack Stadium.

Trailing 4-0 and having committed three errors, the Phillies (15-20) scored four times in the sixth and four more runs in the seventh, each frame punctuated by a three-run homer.

Willie Jones (9) connected in the sixth, and struggling Wally Post (4, .161) struck in the seventh, wiping out the deficit.

The Braves (16-17) scored single runs in the eighth and ninth, and had the bases loaded in the ninth inning but could only score one run. The game ended when pinch-hitter Casey Wise hit into a 3-6-3 double play.

Milwaukee jumped on Phillies starter Robin Roberts for three runs in the first inning. The big blow was a two-run home run by Eddie Mathews (9).

Roberts (5-2) hung around, however, and pitched seven innings for the win. Milwaukee starter Lew Burdette (4-4) took the loss after 6.2 innings. Jack Meyer picked up his first save.

The Braves' 1-2-3 hitters (Billy Bruton, Mathews, Hank Aaron) went a combined 8-for-15.

The Phillies won despite three errors by first baseman Ed Bouchee and a miscue by third baseman Willie Jones.
