A crucial ninth inning error by left fielder Leon Wagner cost the Giants. Bill White singled to lead off the Cardinals' ninth, but Wagner let the ball trickle under his glove, enabling White to advance to third base with nobody out. Joe Cunningham promptly singled White home to break a 1-1 tie. Both starters (Larry Jackson and Sam Jones for St. Louis and SF, respectively) pitched eight innings and allowed only one run. Ken Boyer hit a solo homer for the Cardinals in the fourth inning.

The Braves won the rubber game thanks to a 12-hit attack and four Bucs errors. Billy Bruton had three hits and six RBI, including a two-run homer. The Braves blew the game open with a five-run sixth, capped by Bruton's four-bagger. Joey Jay gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings, but it was good enough to qualify for the win. Pittsburgh has lost 9 of 11.

Jim Baxes' pinch-hit home run with two out in the bottom of the ninth snapped the Dodgers' seven-game losing streak in dramatic fashion. The Cubs tied the game in their half of the ninth on a two-out triple by Bobby Thomson that scored Irv Noren. Don Demeter added a two-run homer for Los Angeles.

A four-run third inning lifted the Phillies to victory. Seven straight Phillies reached base, chasing Reds starter Joe Nuxhall. Sparky Anderson went 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Willie Kirkland, Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda hit back-to-back-to-back solo homers in the third inning to stake the Giants to a 5-0 lead. Mays had also hit a two-run shot in the first inning. The Cardinals fell to four games behind red-hot, first-place San Francisco. John Antonelli pitched his seventh complete game of the season to earn his eighth win.

Don Hoak's RBI single in the 12th proved to be the game winner. The Braves had the bases loaded with nobody out in the 10th but failed to score. Both starting pitchers (Vern Law and Warren Spahn; Pittsburgh and Milwaukee respectively) threw 11 innings in yet another Pirates-Braves pitching duel. Milwaukee's Hank Aaron and Wes Covington pulled a rare feat: back-to-back triples in the first inning.

The Dodgers dropped their seventh straight as the Cubs roughed up Don Drysdale, the league leader in innings pitched. Seven straight Cubs batters reached base in a six-run second inning. Chicago pounded out 13 hits to move to within one game of .500 (21-22). The Dodgers, alone in first place two weeks ago, are in fifth place, 9 games out of first.

The Phillies built a 4-0 lead by the sixth inning and held on. Roy McMillan's two-run homer in the eighth inning brought the Reds close, and Cincy loaded the bases in the ninth inning before Dick Farrell got the final two outs for the save. Sparky Anderson had a double and two RBI for the Phillies.

The Giants scored six runs in the eighth inning, erasing a 7-4 deficit in defeating the Dodgers for a fifth straight time in as many days. Don Demeter's grand slam broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning, but the struggling Dodgers couldn't hang onto the lead. Wally Moon, Don Zimmer and Dick Gray also hit home runs for Los Angeles. The Giants banged out eight hits in the eighth inning.

Hank Aaron's two-out solo homer in the bottom of the 10th was the decisive blow. Pittsburgh's Harvey Haddix pitched eight shutout innings (one hit) but was replaced in the ninth by Roy Face. The Braves tied the game in the ninth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Johnny Logan. Aaron then victimized Face in the 10th.

The Giants beat the Dodgers for a fourth straight day. Dick Gray's error in the sixth inning put Bob Schmidt in scoring position, and Schmidt was plated by a Jim Davenport two-out single to break a 1-1 tie. Felipe Alou added a solo homer for the first-place Giants.

HIATUS

Hello all....

I am in the midst of a replay of the 1972 Detroit Tigers, using Ball Park Baseball. This replay, done in "real time," will take me into October. So this 1959 NL replay with SOM baseball will be going on hiatus until fall.

Phi 3, Mil 2 (10 inn); Mil 6, Phi 4

Sunday, May 24-- The Milwaukee Braves shocked the Philadelphia Phillies with four runs in the top of the ninth inning of the nightcap of a doubleheader, returning the favor from the first game, in winning 6-4 and earning a split of the twinbill at Connie Mack Stadium.

In the first game, the Phillies scored twice in the ninth inning to tie the game, then won it in the tenth inning, 3-2.

In the second game, the Braves roughed up reliever Jack Meyer in the ninth inning on three hits and three walks to score four times. Frank Torre's two-run double was the big blow.

The stunning comeback was payback for what the Phillies (16-22) did in the first game.

Braves starter Joey Jay was cruising along, pitching a shutout heading into the ninth inning, his team ahead 2-0. Jay had only surrendered three hits to that point.

But the inning quickly unraveled. Pinch-hitter Dave Philley led off with a walk. Richie Ashburn singled Philley to second base. Chico Fernandez sacrificed the runners along. After an intentional walk to Ed Bouchee, struggling Wally Post delivered a two-run single to tie the game. Jay got out of the inning with no further damage.

The Braves (18-18) went 1-2-3 in the tenth, then Sparky Anderson led off the Phillies' half with a single off reliever (and loser) Bob Rush (0-3). Joe Lonnett sacrificed Anderson to second. Harry Hanebrink was intentionally walked, but Ashburn laced a single to right field that scored Anderson without a throw.

Both Jay and Gene Conley went nine innings in the first game but each got a no decision.

Humberto Robinson (3-1) got the win in the first game, while Milwaukee's Juan Pizarro (2-0) was the winner in the nightcap. Meyer (0-1) took the loss in Game 2.
